The most frequently asked question is:
Which way of fighting is the most efficient?

There is no such thing as the best martial art, the best style, the best system. Bruce Lee said that over 30 years ago and discussed it in public more than once. He found out that most fighting methods are are restricted to special fighting distances and fighting techniques.

These restrictions do not exist in a street fight.

A Judoka for e.g. moves in grabbing distance of his opponent and a boxer in boxing range, because he won’t have to defend himself against throws or kicks. These two systems are the best in their ranges but they will be having problems in a street fight. The most important thing therefore is to practice in all possible fighting distances!

The ranges in the Progressive Self Defence System are the following:

  1. long range
    1. here you mostly use kicks.
    2. when using weapons, the main concept is that of Filipino Larga Mano, which means the attacks are answered by direct counter attacks.
  2. medium range
    1. this is dominated by combinations of boxing and kicking techniques.
    2. in a fight involving knives main techniques would be cuts towards the limbs; involving sticks attacks would be aimed at the head and joints like knees, elbows, hands and shoulders.

  3. close range
    1. here elbow, knee, head butting and boxing techniques are used. It will also often happen that the opponent gets to hold you so this is the range for throwing, levering and throttling. You can also attack sensitive nerve points.
    2. knives are very useful in the close distance because you can cut and stab with them. The butt of the stick or the knife can be used as a hitting weapon.
  4. on the ground
    1. you can use levers and holding techniques but these often only work after “softening” the attacker so never forget to box and kick and use knee, elbow and head techniques at the right time. This should be practiced quite often because they differ to the techniques used in upright fighting.
    2. when the use of knives and sticks is introduced into the training on the ground  there will be a lot of  problems at the beginning.
    3. For efficient fighting on the ground you have to practice your falling skills. Our motto: “Falling is not a disgrace. Not getting up again is!“
